It’s most important settlement early became today’s Chalkida port city, since it was the closest to the mainland and had natural resources of copper, making the city a trading center of great importance. The island’s name stands for “rich in cattle”.
It is excellent for cycling around on, since there are many small villages and interesting places worth visiting. Of course, there are nice beaches as well, and depending on where you stay, you can enjoy some real peace and quiet, or a hectic nightlife. Visiting local beaches and go siteseeing on you bike, there is no better place than Chalkida and the surrounding historic villages to live your Greek dream. You will have the opportunity to cycle coast to coast along beautifull beaches, endless beach bars and taste local seafood and exquisite cuisine. You can visit Chalkida seafront for a quick cup of coffee and learn all about the unique tidal phenomenon of Evripos strait.

If you like mountain biking and get thrilled for cycling along ancient wineroutes, medieval castles and alpine forests Evia has it all. Just let yourself go and skilled mountain bike guides will show you secret pathways and passages not even the local are acquainted with. Just 10 minutes from Chalkida you can go Castle chasing in the small villages of Vasiliko, Fylla and Afrati. In Afrati village you will have the opportunity to cycle through a magnesite quarry which has been abandoned several years now. The bold ones can take it up on level and try the advanced course and try their skills at the mini DH track which is not dangerous at all.

Extreme cycling is something Evia is really proud of. Visiting mount Dirfis you will not believe what the locals have built for you. Sweet singletrack for cross country cycling, Enduro MTB Trails, and downhill routes. Located just above Steni village this whole area is a mountainbike paradise awaiting for you 12 months per year, apart from a couple of weeks when it snows. As the snow melts you will enjoy the option of cyclind at the altitude of 1100m in amongst the alpine forest and in the afternoon you can enjoy a quick swim in the nearby beaches. A true heaven on earth. The well know Enduro Mediterraneo takes place on these trails.
